Stephanie was born and raised in Duluth, where she graduated from The Marshall School in 1998. She completed her undergraduate courses at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 2001 and received her Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul in 2005. Stephanie returned to Duluth immediately after law school to join her father, Jim Balmer, and his partners in the representation of disadvantaged and injured people.

Stephanie and her husband, Jesse, spend their time raising their two children, reading, enjoying local music, playing and coaching soccer, skiing and curling.

Stephanie serves on the board of governors for the Minnesota Association for Justice (MAJ) and is also a board member of Generations Health Care Initiatives, a local foundation whose focus is expanding health care access and improving health care for the underserved. She was a board member of the local United Way for several years, served as president of the 11th District New Lawyers section, and coordinated the legal services for the yearly Homeless Connect event in Duluth. Stephanie has presented at several state-wide seminars in automobile injuries and workers' compensation.

Stephanie also was recognized as a ‘Rising Star' each year from 2008 to 2012 by Minnesota Law & Politics, an honor given to 2.5 percent of Minnesota attorneys under 40 years old or in practice for 10 years or less.
